Why Save Energy?
Saving energy saves you money and helps combat climate change.
Climate Change
Climate change is emerging as one of the great challenges for modern society. Carbon dioxide is the main contributor responsible for 80% of emissions from industrialised countries. The gas is released into the atmosphere primarily from burning fossil fuels: oil, petrol and natural gas. A growing population coupled with increasing demands on transport and energy, has led to emissions increasing at dramatic rates.
- 40% of global energy is consumed by industry
- 65% of industrial energy is consumed by electric motors
- 25% of global energy is consumed by electric motors
Save Energy – Save Money
There are a large amount of applications where motors may not need to run at full speed 100% of the time. Using variable speed drives to control your process will save energy, and save your company valuable costs. Using a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) to reduce the speed motor on Pump or Fan for instance can typically achieve the following savings;
Example – 7.5kW Pump Running 24/7, 365days a Year.
Expected Costs at full speed
- 1kWh = 14Cent (approx.)
- Pump = 7.5kW per Hour
- Cost per hour = 7.5 x 0.14 = 1.05 Euro per hour
- Cost per day = 1.05 x 24 = 25.20Euro
- Cost per week = 25.2 x 7 = 176.40Euro
- Cost per year = 176.40 x 52 = 9172.80Euro
Running the pump at 45Hz is a 10% reduction in speed. Power is proportional to the speed cubed of the motor so a 10% reduction in speed = 10%³ reduction in power or in other words a 10% reduction in speed = 27.1% less power used.
Therefore by installing a VSD on this application and running the unit at 45Hz instead of 50Hz we could expect to1kWh = 14Cent (approx.)
- 1kWh = 14Cent (approx.)
- 5kW x 72.9% = 5.47kW
- Pump = 5.47kW per hour
- Cost per hour = 5.47 x 0.14 = 0.77 cents per hour
- Cost per day = 0.77 x 24 = 18.48Euro
- Cost per week = 18.48 x 7 = 129.36Euro
- Cost per year = 129.36 x 52 = 6726.72Euro
Potential savings when running the pump at 45Hz = 2446.08Euro per year
